The CDU/CSU and SPD have announced plans to introduce a major reform package for Germany. They are talking about a "reform window" until the summer. There is no shortage of pressing issues. However, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider's plans for "Extended Producer Responsibility" (EPR) for textiles tell a different story.
The outline paper for a textile law published today not only falls short of the political promises. "It places a considerable burden on our shoe manufacturers and brands," criticizes Torben Schütz (right), Managing Director of the German Association of the Footwear and Leather Goods Industry (HDS/L). The announced law does not even begin to address the problems of fast fashion. "This is not a measure to promote the global competitiveness of our companies. Instead of reducing bureaucracy, it envisions significant burdens and further, incalculable costs for our members. This is anything but an industry-friendly, efficient policy," Schütz complains. |
